Eleni Vigneron Denimore,
When I first posted raindrops on roses as my forecast for the day,
I never knew you would become my truest favorite thing,
more precious than whiskers on kittens,
bright copper kettles, or warm woolen mittens.
When I was cream-colored ponies, you were my crisp apple strudels.
When I was doorbells and sleigh bells, you were my schnitzel with noodles.
Every forecast I posted, you met with its perfect companion,
until our days became a duet written just for us.
These are a few of my favorite things:
Your long and thoughtful letters,
your lyrical forecasts that twine with mine,
and the way you try to kill me at least three times a week.
Like ninety-nine red balloons drifting across a summer sky,
I have learned to float through the dangers you set before me…
but truth be told, I’d let you catch me every time.
I promise to keep singing you songs,
to write you letters longer than the list of your assassination attempts,
and to love you with the kind of devotion that makes even your poisons taste like wine.
I have already taken a preemptive antidote for today.
