I was reading.
That’s all. Just reading.
Bloodshade Park was quiet, the kind of quiet that only comes when the moon is full and the squirrels have finally accepted their mortality. I had found a bench—stone, moss-covered, delightfully tragic—and settled in with a novel. Something romantic. Something with fangs and yearning and at least one dramatic rain scene.
I was halfway through a sentence—“Her blood called to him like a forgotten hymn”—when the air shifted.
No warning. No footsteps. No ominous violin swell.
Just ZAP.
A bolt of magic slammed into my chest like a caffeinated lightning strike. My book exploded. My hair frizzed into a halo of betrayal. My cloak caught fire. I smelled like scorched dignity.
I staggered to my feet, blinking through the smoke, and there—standing with one hand raised and the other casually adjusting their collar—was a vampire I had never seen before.
They wore leather. Sunglasses. At night. Their aura screamed “I do what I want.”
“Who,” I rasped, “are you?”
They grinned. “TheBadaap.”
I stared. “You zapped me.”
They nodded. “Felt right.”
I looked down at my smoldering boots. “I was reading.”
“Yeah,” they said. “You looked too peaceful.”
I blinked. Once. Twice. A third time, just to be sure this wasn’t a hallucination brought on by expired blood wine.
Then, without another word, TheBadaap turned and vanished into the shadows, leaving behind only the scent of ozone and audacity.
I stood alone, charred, confused, and emotionally unprepared.
Somewhere in the distance, a squirrel laughed. |
